Even though summer is winding down, there are still concerts, fairs, and other exciting summer activities. You’ll no doubt want to beat the heat and still look great, so here are some summer fashion tips to consider.
Whatever your budget, try selecting clothing that is well made from quality materials. Sometimes “bargain brands” are not well constructed and don’t hold up after a cleaning or two. It is heart breaking to take that pretty top out of the washer only to discover that seams have come apart and threads are raveling. Those couple extra dollars spent on well made summer fashion items pay off in the long run.
Today’s fabrics offer some unique features that are nice to have included in your summer wardrobe. It is a good idea to consider what fabrics your summer clothes are made from, and note any additional features of those fabrics.
Natural fibers like cotton, chambray, and linen have long been “go to” summer fabrics. They are lightweight and breathable, allowing airflow to help keep the body cool. Some of the downfalls of these choices, however, are that they often absorb moisture and wrinkle easily.
Moisture wicking fabrics help you stay cooler and drier. These “moisture wicking” fabrics have some gapping in the weave so moisture is forced through toward the outside of the garment. That moisture pulled away from the body and can evaporate more easily to keep you cooler and drier. Some fabrics are also chemically treated to resist moisture being absorbed into the fabric, thus encouraging it to wick away.
SPF is a term most folks these days are familiar with. It stands for Sun Protective Factor and is used to indicate the amount of protection offered from harmful rays that a sunscreen or cosmetic has. For clothing, UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) is the indicator that a fabric will help block harmful UV rays from penetrating to the skin. A garment that has a UPF of 50, for example, will allow only 1/50 of the sun’s rays to reach the skin. The higher the UPF, the better the protection from those harmful UV rays.
Fit is ALWAYS important. If you like the look and are comfortable in a garment it will be a summer fashion item that you wear over and over. Items that are uncomfortable or don’t look good on you will hang in the closet or stay in a drawer. If you don’t love it; don’t buy it.
Color! Most of us tend to have certain color palettes that we prefer. Choose colors that complement what you already have. That way, you can mix and match to create many different looks with just a few tops and bottoms.
Scour the sale racks and bargain basements. Last year’s style might still be on trend this year at a fraction of the price. Here’s a great place to look:
